Measure the doorway, not the room.

Nearly every piece of furniture that comes back to us fitted the space perfectly and could not get up the stairs. So the first tool on this site is not a mood board — it is three measurements and an answer that will sometimes tell you not to order.

Three questions, answered separately.

Does it fit the room with a walkway in front of it, does it get through the doorway on its side, and does it turn the corner? A yes to the first and a no to the second is the most expensive combination in this trade, and it is the one a single “dimensions” line on a product page hides.

Ten pieces, made to a pattern we have not changed in four years

Every listing carries the assembled size, the packed size, and how it arrives — the second and third being the two that decide whether a delivery works.

Solid wood

Four things about it that nobody tells you before you buy.

Solid wood is better than the alternatives in most of the ways that matter and it is not inert. If you are going to live with it for twenty years, you should know what it is going to do in the first two.

  • It movesA table top gains and loses several millimetres across its width between the wet season and the dry one. Our tops are built to float on their frames for exactly this reason; a top screwed down rigidly is a top that will split.
  • Small cracks at the ends are normalHairline checks at the end grain in the first year are the wood settling, not a defect. Cracks that run along a joint are a defect, and those we replace.
  • The colour changesTeak darkens noticeably in the first six months and then stops. If you buy two pieces a year apart they will not match at first, and will within a year. We say this before you order the second one.
  • It marksA wet glass leaves a ring, a hot pan leaves a scar. Both sand out of an oiled finish in about twenty minutes; neither comes out of a lacquered one, which is why we oil.
The workshop

Made in Jepara, which is a claim worth checking.

Half the furniture in this country says “Jepara” on it. Here is what ours means, in numbers you can ask us about.

14

people, one building

Four cabinetmakers, three finishers, two upholsterers, a machinist, two in the office and two who deliver. Nothing is subcontracted except the metalwork on the bed frames.

12%

moisture, kiln-dried

Measured on every board before it is cut, and written on the batch card. Furniture that splits within a year is almost always wood that went in at eighteen per cent because the kiln time cost money.

10 yr

on the joints

Mortise and tenon, dowelled and glued, no screws holding a frame together. If a joint fails in ten years we repair or replace it — a promise that is only affordable because of the two numbers to its left.

Delivery

Charged at cost, with the stairs itemised.

Free delivery is not free. It is the ground-floor customer with a lift paying for the fourth-floor customer without one.

Outside Java is expensive and we will not soften it: a wardrobe to Makassar costs Rp 4.320.000 to deliver, which is thirty per cent again on a Rp 14.200.000 piece. For anything smaller than a dining table we will usually tell you to buy locally. The calculator gives your exact figure including the stairs.

Customers

Three of them, including one we told not to order

“I put my measurements in and the tool said the sofa would not get through my door. I messaged expecting to be talked round; instead they suggested the version with removable arms and charged me for it.”

Wisnu AdityaSemarang, March

“A crack appeared at the end of the table in the second month. They explained what it was, offered to replace the top anyway, and I kept it. Two years on it has not moved again.”

Laksmi DewantiSolo, January

“I wanted a wardrobe shipped to Manado. They worked out the delivery, told me it was thirty per cent of the price, and said to buy locally. I bought two chairs instead and will be back for the table.”

Five minutes with a tape measure, before anything else.

The doorway, the landing and the lift door. It is the least interesting part of buying furniture and it is the part that decides whether any of the rest of it happens.
